CITIZEN'S ACADEMY
NEW CLASS BEGINNING
MARCH 24, 2020
The LaGrange Police Department hosts an annual police citizen’s academy and meets once a week on Thursdays for ten weeks. The academy is a community oriented police project that is free of charge to persons eighteen years of age or older with exceptions handled on a case by case basis. The purpose of the academy is to introduce the community to its police department and to foster a positive relationship with the officers and staff of the department. We also introduce the community to the different facets of law enforcement and attempt to dispel myths about police work.
Class attendees are introduced to the command structure of our agency and are given instruction on topics including:
Crime scene investigation, Evidence processing, Traffic enforcement, Communications, The judicial system, The corrections system, and many other topics.
In addition to classroom study, participants take tours of Oldham County Central Dispatch, The Oldham County Justice Center, and The Oldham County Jail. All of the study culminates in a ride-along with an officer during a regular shift assignment. At the end of the ten week course, we celebrate the conclusion of the academy with a dinner and presentation of a certificate of completion.
Realistically, most people meet police officers during the course of some negative event, be it a traffic violation, or some sort of criminal investigation. This gives the public a chance to meet us in a non-threatening, non-judgmental environment that is really a lot of fun for both the participants and the officers. We enjoy the opportunity to visit with participants and “show off” what we do.
As a whole, we are proud of the LaGrange Police Department and enjoy the opportunity to serve the community. We feel that community oriented projects are a great way to work not just for the public but with the public. Let’s face it; crime prevention is a team effort that everyone can help with. Understanding what we do and how we do it helps coordinate the effort to our ultimate goal; a safe and prosperous community.
Our agency advertises the academy about a month before the first class on Facebook and on this page.
You may download the application below or obtain one in person at the LaGrange Police Department, (502) 225-0444. The number of participants is limited.
There is no deadline but we will stop taking applications when the class is full.
All applicants must be 18 years or older and are subject to a criminal background check prior to enrollment in the course. All materials for the course are also provided free of charge.
