LaGrange Police Department's Kid's
Fishing Derby
2007

The LaGrange Police
Department hosted its second annual Kid’s Fishing Derby this past
Saturday at Eagle Creek Golf Course. Several people have asked me what
we were hoping to accomplish by hosting such an event. Our goal
throughout the entire planning of the derby was to provide a community
event which primarily focused on allowing children to meet and spend
time with police officers in an enjoyable atmosphere. Our
responsibility to the public is not only to enforce laws and educate
citizens about the law, but more importantly, to be a part of the
community and encourage positive interactions with police officers. The
secondary goal was to provide a family-friendly environment in which
parents could spend time with their children in a safe and fun setting.
Our fishing derby
brought together 60 children in and around our community which ranged
from 2 years old up to age 16. We nearly doubled last year’s
participation. Fishing started slowly but ended with a flurry of
activity with over 150 fish caught and prizes awarded to the girl and
boy who caught the largest fish and the person who caught the most
fish. A big congratulations goes out to Kelsey Hoskins, age 12, who
caught the biggest fish for the girls, the most fish in the derby, and a
turtle. She took home 2 trophies. Mason Reppen, age 12, won the biggest
fish caught trophy for the boys with his 2.2 pound catfish. All the
participants received a new fishing pole and t-shirt. We had a perfect
day for a family event and Fish and Wildlife provided us with extra
poles for the participants. With the help of the donations we received,
the LaGrange Police Department was able to provide hot dogs, chips,
cookies and drinks.
With all that being said
it is important to recognize all of the individuals and businesses whom
without their financial sponsorships or donated time this event would
have never succeeded: Eagle Creek Golf Course, The Oldham Era, Bedford
Bank, The Bank Oldham County, East & Westbrook Construction, Fastline,
ACE Home Center, Champion Chevrolet, McDonald’s, Allstate Ready Mix,
Challengers, Kinser & Kinser, DYNEGY, National City Bank, Irish Rover
Too, LaGrange Service Center, KY Tae Kwon Do, Costco, Big O Tires, Dairy
Queen, Hometown Pizza, Walmart, and Custom Graphics. A special thanks
goes to those who volunteered time and effort into the project: Dale
Stanton with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, Challengers volunteers, and Pat
and Sharon Vincent.
I want to thank everyone
who took part in the LaGrange Police Department’s Kid’s Fishing Derby.
We worked as a community to create an event that enriches the lives of
all those who participate. We hope to see everyone again next year.

FORWARD
The LaGrange Police Department has
continued to evolve with the community. As the City grows we realize
that we as a professional police agency must grow along with it, not
only with manpower, but with technology and police tactics.
We are often asked what issues our
agency is currently addressing in the City of
LaGrange. As an effort to open our doors to the public and make
everyone more aware of what is occurring in our community, we are eager
to compile this data and share it. The 2006 Annual Report represents
our second year of providing this service for our community. We use
this same information to look for trends or attempt to proactively
enforce issues that we believe may be on the increase.
As our population grows, we can
anticipate that our calls for service and our expectations to the
community will continue to increase. We as a department must do
everything we can to stay on top of the needs of the City. Obviously,
with twelve officers we realize that we cannot accomplish this alone.
We depend on the community to assist in every aspect of our profession.
The LaGrange Police Department makes every effort to educate the public
with as much information as possible. This desire is what continues to
drive the publishing of our annual report.
The LaGrange Police Department
hopes you find this information useful, and if you should have any
questions about the provided material, please do not hesitate to call
our department.
Respectfully,
Kevin L. Collett
Chief of Police
